Africa’s premier club competition, the CAF Champions League, reaches a crucial point this weekend, with 32 teams set to face off in the second leg of the second qualifying round. South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates are both in the running to book their place in the group stage.

Masandawana Need Breakthrough Against Wiliete on Home Soil

Mamelodi Sundowns face a stern test to keep their CAF Champions League title defence alive after kicking off this year’s qualifiers with a goalless draw against Angolan club Wiliete SC at Estadio Nacional de Tundavala in Lubango last week.

As discussed in our Sundowns vs Wiliete prediction, Masandawana received a bye in the opening preliminary round but struggled to create many clear openings in the first leg of this clash. The Brazilians now return to Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria this weekend with the tie hanging in the balance.

Miguel Cardoso’s preparations have been thrown off course for the decisive second-leg encounter!

Sundowns have a major injury concern ahead of the return leg, with Teboho Mokoena’s availability in serious doubt. The influential midfielder was carried off on a stretcher in the closing stages of the first leg in Angola after sustaining an ankle injury.

Adding to Cardoso’s issues, captain Ronwen Williams is also a major doubt due to an ongoing shoulder problem. His potential absence could leave backup goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse facing a demanding test in this crucial encounter.

Cardoso could be forced to throw Bathusi Aubaas into the midfield spotlight, with newcomer Nuno Santos and Thapelo Morena shouldering much of the creative burden in attack. Any lack of fluency could leave Downs vulnerable to Wiliete’s deep defensive block and quick counter-attacks.

Pirates Carry Slender Advantage into Soweto Blockbuster

Of the two South African teams in CAFCL action this weekend, Orlando Pirates are in the strongest position after grinding out a 1-0 victory over Namibia’s African Stars in the first leg of their tie at the Botswana National Stadium last weekend.

While Pirates have the upper hand, Abdeslam Ouaddou has warned his side against internal complacency!

The Bucs’ recent continental history serves as a reminder that qualification is never guaranteed, and the plucky African Stars arrive in Soweto determined to challenge the South African giants without intimidation. Speaking ahead of the clash, African Stars head coach Gerald Gunther said:

"We will give everything physically and mentally, compete for every ball and fight for one another until the final whistle. We know how important this occasion is, and we want our supporters and the entire nation to stand behind us. We will do everything in our power to keep the African Stars flag flying high.”

The Namibian underdogs have also made no secret of their belief that they can exploit Pirates’ high defensive line. The hosts will therefore need to remain disciplined from the outset to avoid conceding early, which could complicate their qualification hopes.
