The Saints are set to face an independent commission regarding potentially spying on Middlesbrough’s training session in the build-up to their Playoff semi-final first leg.

Saints Accused of Spying on Boro Training Session Ahead of Playoff semi-final

The EFL Championship Promotion Playoff semi-finals were decided earlier this week, with Hull City beating Millwall 2-0 on aggregate, while Southampton overcame Middleborough 2-1, both results that confirmed our Championship predictions. 

However, ahead of the match at St. Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday, a massive controversy emerged, with an alleged spy, who Boro claim to be a Saints’ analyst, having been caught hiding in nearby bushes “spying” on Kim Hellberg’s side during a training session. 

Reports suggest that at one point, the suspicious individual was seen aiming his mobile phone toward the training session while wearing in-head earphones. Staff of Middlesbrough suspect that he may have been streaming the session via a video call. 

The BBC reported that a member of Boro’s back-office staff approached the individual, who refused to identify himself. It is understood that he then deleted content from his phone before fleeing into a nearby golf club's bathroom, changing clothes and leaving the scene. 

Southampton have since been charged with a breach of rule 127 - as Leeds United were back in 2019 under Marcelo Bielsa. They would generally have 14 days to respond to the charges, but it is believed that the EFL have asked the independent disciplinary commission to fast-track the case. 

 

Eckert Storms Out of Post-Match Press Conference 

Adding to the controversy, Southampton boss Tonda Eckert walked out of his press conference following his side’s 2-1 victory over Middlesborough on Tuesday after being asked directly by one of the reporters in attendance if he was “a cheat.” Prior to leaving the room, Eckert said: 

"No, I don't know. It's not easy for me to not comment, there's just nothing I can say at the moment, because it's an ongoing investigation. We're taking the matter very seriously. I will say something. I just can't say it now."

The matter now lies in the hands of the independent commission. If the charge is upheld, Southampton could be thrown out of the Playoffs, and any further punishment could be held against them at the start of next season. 

The commission’s main considerations are whether there is enough evidence to prove wrongdoing and, if so, whether the offence warrants a significant sporting sanction. Of course, there is a possibility that there will be no further action if the commission is unable to pinpoint any wrongdoing by the Saints.
