Last week marked the end of an era, as Ashley Young announced that he will be retiring from professional football at the end of this season. The former Manchester United and England international’s decision brings an end to an incredible 23-year career in which he won several league and cup titles.

Young Ends Career By Helping Ipswich Earn Promotion to Premier League

After 23 incredible years, Ashley Young announced that he is retiring at the end of the season. Across his illustrious career, the 40-year-old has spent time at some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Manchester United, Aston Villa, Inter Milan and Everton. 

Young began his professional career at Watford as a winger before transforming into a full-back at Old Trafford, where he won the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League. He also lifted the Scudetto in Serie A with Inter in 2020-21. Speaking to the media about his decision, Young said:

"I am incredibly proud and fortunate to have achieved everything I have during my career. It’s not too often you sit and think about this while you are still in the game, but I have lived my dream during the last 23 years. It’s now time for some reflection on what I’ve been able to achieve, and the next few weeks and months will be when I decide what I am going to do next.”

Across his career, Young made 765 club appearances and scored 88 goals, while also earning 88 caps for the England national team. He ends his career at Ipswich Town, where he helped the Tractor Boys earn promotion back to the Premier League by finishing second in the Championship. 

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna was full of praise for Young, commending his professionalism and quality, when asked about the veteran full-back’s decision to call time on his career. McKenna also worked with Young as an assistant coach at Man United earlier in their careers.
