The first matchday of the new MLS season left us with a look at how captivating the 2023 season will surely be. The first shock of the season came in the form of new expansion team St. Louis City’s surprise win away from home against Austin FC, one of last season’s best performing sides. Despite the fact that players such as Gareth Bale will no longer be around for this campaign, this edition of Major League Soccer promises to be as competitive as last year, if not better.

The new ‘Leagues Cup

MLS Betting

This year sees a new innovation to the third edition of the Leagues Cup tournament which will now involve all MLS and Liga MX teams, 47 in total. In addition, the 2023 edition of the Leagues Cup also sees the top three finishing teams receive qualification to the 2024 CONCACAF Champions League with the winner of the tournament automatically progressing to the round of 16. The tournament is set to kick off on July 21st and will run until August 19th with the MLS season being paused for the competition to take place.

The Leagues Cup will feature a three-team group stage, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the next round. These types of competitions always have an impact on the domestic leagues and the MLS is no exception. Concentrating on another tournament for an entire month can be inconvenient when it is time to resume the normal league season as it means more matches for the players and they may not return with the same fitness levels.

The new expansion team

The twenty-ninth team in Major League Soccer debuted with a bang on the first matchday by defeating Austin FC, a team that made the Western Conference finals in 2022 and is one of the title contenders. While expansion sides don’t usually do well in their first seasons, St. Louis City SC is expected to have something of a breakthrough in 2023 with the investment made into the squad. One key addition to the team is goalkeeper Roman Bürki, who has played for top clubs in his career such as Borussia Dortmund.

Apple has entered into a 10-year agreement to broadcast all MLS matches. This new partnership has a simple explanation: the competition in the United States and Canada is generating more and more interest among fans. That is why, after 489 goals were scored in 2022, this new year the figure is expected to be surpassed. This is not only because of the new expansion team being added to the mix but because the clubs are reinforcing in a big way with acquisitions that will add a lot to the offensive side of the game.
