For the fourth time in five years the gunners are paired with the infamous Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16. These two teams have met each other more times than any other teams in the Champions League and as fate would have it they meet once again in the 2016/17 Champions League.

A Look Back

Looking back on their previous encounters in the Champions League specifically, one thing comes to mind straight away. Arsenal never fare very well against the German superpower club. Arsenal have had the odd win against Bayern, for example, when they met in the second leg of the last 16 in the Champions League back in 2005, Arsenal got a result but in the grand scheme of things, that was the end of their campaign that year as Bayern Munich advanced as they won on aggregate 3-2.

Alexis Sanchez Arsenal

This is a reoccurring thing as well, as Arsenal have overcame Bayern Munich in the Champions League more than once yet, in all the times they’ve met it always spells the end of Arsenal’s campaign. They were drawn against one another in 2013, 2014 and 2015. In 2013, Arsenal were very unlucky and just missed out on a place in the quarter finals. After their two games against Bayern it was 3-3 on aggregate but because they had more away goals, Bayern Munich advanced. They later went on to win the Champions League that year, defeating Juventus, Barcelona and then their Bundesliga rivals Dortmund.

Could this year finally be the year that Arsenal overcome the German club and advance to the latter stages of the Champions League? In the Premier League they’ve been impressive and consistent. They are currently in fourth place and within touching distance of leaders Chelsea. That said Bayern Munich have been pretty much flawless in the Bundesliga this season, they currently sit in first place and have done so for the majority of the season. Both clubs have been impressive in the Champions League this season, getting to where they are now. Irregardless of how good these respective teams have been this season, it’s going to come down to two 90+ minute games of football. Arsenal are away in the first leg so if they can come away with a goal or two, it will set up the second leg nicely for them.

Over 2.5 Goals

Both teams have been scoring plenty of goals in their domestic leagues, as well as the Champions League group stages. As well as that, when these teams meet, it almost always results in high scoring games. We believe that this game will have more than 2.5 goals. With Bayern playing at home they’ll take to it well and are sure to score one if not more. On top of that Arsenal will thieve under pressure and are likely to get a goal or two too. Over 2.5 goals proposed by .

Both Teams to Score

As mentioned, when these team got together in the past games it more often than not resulted in high scoring games. Goals coming from both parties, and so we believe that this trend will continue. Both teams to score, proposed at . In correlation with our prediction that both teams will score, we also believe that most of the scoring will be done in the first half of the game.
