Sunderland and Stoke City will face off this Saturday in an FA Cup third round clash pitting two Championship sides. In their league, the two sides have had contrasting runs in the season, with Sunderland doing better. Here’s our preview and prediction of the match.

This encounter will be the third between the two sides this season. Either side won once, when playing at home and Sunderland will hope to extend that run.

The Black Cats have had a positive start to 2025, winning their opening two matches. Stoke City were actually the last team to beat Sunderland and the hosts will have revenge among their plans.

On the flipside, Stoke City haven't won a game since their victory at home to Sunderland. Their first two matches of 2025 ended in 0-0 draws and they will want to improve on that.

A positive in their recent matches is the three straight clean sheets they’ve registered ahead of this game. However, a poor run in attack has Stoke City on just one goal in their last five matches.

It is also partly to blame for their current form, which reads just a win in the last 12 matches. In half of their previous 10 matches, Stoke City suffered defeat.
