Super Sunday in the Premier League gets underway at the Stadium of Light, with Sunderland taking on Fulham on Matchday 2 in the top flight. The Cottagers did the double over the Black Cats last season, and our prediction is that they will take at least a point from this one as well.
An incredible first season back in the EPL has seen Sunderland enter the 2026-27 campaign with high expectations. However, their opening fixture of the new term produced a flat display and ended in disappointment at Portman Road last week, which will have Régis Le Bris demanding a much better showing in their first home game this weekend.
Despite losing their first match of the season to Chelsea, Fulham’s new-look forward line looked vibrant and promising at home last week. The Cottagers will look to build on that performance here, and history is on their side, as they are unbeaten in their last five matches across all competitions against their upcoming opponents (W4 D1). Let’s get into the key stats!

Sunderland - Fulham: Form Analysis
Sunderland looked to be on course to earn a share of the spoils against Ipswich Town last weekend, but a sloppy last-minute goal at Portman Road saw them lose their season opener 2-1.
That defeat highlighted the Black Cats’ need for improvement at both ends, as they only managed to win 44% of their defensive duels and accumulated just 0.66 xG across the 90 minutes.
The hosts’ greatest strength last season was their home form, as they earned 33 of their 54 points at the Stadium of Light and conceded just 20 goals in their 19 league games at this venue.
However, Sunderland have only won one of their last nine home games against Fulham in all competitions!
Meanwhile, after a summer overhaul, Fulham made a positive impression in their first match of the season despite coming out on the wrong side of the 3-2 scoreline against Chelsea last weekend.
The Cottagers followed up that performance with another impressive showing on Thursday night, when they romped to a 3-0 victory over Wimbledon in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
The visitors ended last season winless in their final five away games and failed to score in four of those matches, but their last league win on the road came at this very ground, 3-1 in late February.

Sunderland & Fulham Squad Analysis
Nilson Angulo scored Sunderland’s only goal from a free-kick last week. However, aside from that, the Ecuadorian winger had a poor game, finishing on 0.15 xG and failing to create any clear chances for Brian Brobbey up top.
Trai Hume was the Black Cats’ best attacker last weekend. He created three chances (two big chances) and led the team in total shots (2) as well as touches in the opposition box (5).
Le Bris confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Nordi Mukiele is available for this weekend, but Simon Adingra is ruled out through injury. New arrival Dayyan Methalie is suspended due to the five yellow cards he earned while playing in France.
Gonzalo Garcia scored on his Premier League debut against Chelsea!
The former Real Madrid man is now the first Fulham player to score on debut for the club since 2014, and he followed that up by netting the Cottagers' third goal off the bench against Wimbledon on Thursday night.
Josh King looks set to play a big role under Alvaro Arbeloa this season. He scored an excellent goal against the Blues and recorded two shots on target as well as a team-high nine touches in the opposition box.
Luc de Fougerolles sustained a knock in the EFL Cup victory and is a serious doubt for this weekend, while Tom Cairney is only expected to return from his knee injury in mid-October.

Our Sunderland vs Fulham Prediction
After their exceptional 2025-26 season, expectations are high for Sunderland this term, but their lack of activity during the summer transfer window is now under the spotlight following their disappointing performance against Ipswich last week.
Fulham’s youthful new-look attack has received major praise after their first two games of the season, and given their record in this fixture, we feel they will be able to take at least a point from this weekend’s encounter. Our Sunderland vs Fulham prediction is draw or Fulham.
