The new Top 14 season gets underway this weekend. The first match sees Stade Francais host newly-promoted Montauban. La Pink Army struggled last season but will hope to start the new term with a home win. Here's our match prediction.
Stade Francais finished 12th in the table last season, just a place and a point above the relegation zone. Only a final-day home win over Castres kept them in this division. It was their away form that caused them problems with all 13 league games being lost.
It was a different story at home though with ten wins and three losses. They won five of their last six home league games last season. The only loss in those fixtures was inflicted by champion Stade Toulousain.
Montauban are likely to face a long tough season to stay in Top 14. They only finished sixth in the second division last season, 17 points behind the automatic promotion places. Success came in the promotion play-offs and they were promoted to Top 14.
Bookmakers do not fancy their chances of avoiding an immediate return to Division 2. Montauban are the total outsiders and fully expected to finish bottom of the table. This is a tough start and we tip Stade Francais to win on a 20.5 points handicap.
