Two sides with contrasting ambitions for the rest of the season clash this weekend when Sporting Lisbon welcomes Santa Clara to Estadio Jose Alvalade for a Primeira Liga encounter on Saturday evening. The hosts are currently in fourth place, still in the hunt for a Champions League qualification spot, with 50 points in 24 matches, eight points behind Porto in second, though they still have a game in hand. Sporting won their last match convincingly, 3-0 at home to Boavista, which was their fifth win in their last six matches, and is now on a 4-match winning run. Their home record has also been very impressive, winning 10 and losing just two of their 12 matches at Estadio Jose Alvalade this season. Sporting came out as 2-1 winners in the reverse fixture and will expect nothing less than another three points in this one. 

Meanwhile, it’s quite a different story for Santa Clara, who currently sits at the foot of the Primeira Liga table, with just 15 points in 25 matches this season. The visitors, along with Pacos Ferreira and Maritimo, have been cut adrift from the rest and look destined to relegation this season. Santa Clara suffered a 2-0 loss in their last match against Rio Ave, which extended their dismal record to 12 games without a win, including 10 losses and two draws. Unsurprisingly, Santa Clara has the worst away record in the league, winning just one of their 12 matches on the road, along with two draws and nine losses. The visitors have not won any of their last seven matches on the road and will need to pull off the upset of the weekend if they are to take anything from this one.
