A couple of unseeded players meet in the first round of the outdoor hard court Winston Salem Open. Lorenzo Sonego takes on Vit Kopriva and his opponent has been struggling for wins of late, so we predict a Sonego victory.

For the winner, there's a second round match against the ninth seed Adrian Mannarino.

In the latest rankings, Sonego is 88th, 17 places below his opponent. He has only played seven matches on this surface in 2026, winning three of them. His best run on outdoor hard courts this year has been reaching round two in three tournaments.

The most recent was in this month's Cincinnati Open. He beat Juncheng Shang in straight sets, before losing to Frances Tiafoe.

There has been one previous match between these two players with Kopriva winning, but on clay.

Vit Kopriva has won eight outdoor hard court matches this year. However, he has lost the same number. Three ATP Tour second rounds have been reached with two quarter-finals on the Challenger Tour.

The most recent of those was in Cancun last week, losing to Lloyd Harris who is outside the world's top 150.

Kopriva has lost three of his last four matches on this surface. All three were in straight sets.
