We head to Stadionul Steaua in Bucharest on Saturday, when Romania play host to Wales in an international friendly. With three and four of the Tricolours' and the Dragons' last five matches, respectively, ending with both teams scoring, we are leaning toward the goals market as our primary match prediction.
With these sides failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, this will serve as an opportunity for both to prepare for future tournaments. Romania, 56th in FIFA’s world rankings, reached the World Cup UEFA Playoffs via their Nations League ranking, but lost their Path C semi-final 1-0 to Turkey in March this year.
Thirty-seventh-ranked Wales ended their 50-year wait to return to the World Cup in 2022, but they were unable to follow up in this edition. They finished second in their group to secure a spot in the UEFA Playoffs but lost on penalties 4-2 to Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is the first time these sides will meet in this century - let’s get into the key stats!

Romania & Wales Squad Analysis
DC United’s Louis Munteanu came off the bench to score Romania’s only goal against Georgia. He has now netted six goals in his last seven matches for club and country and should get the nod to start this weekend.
Radu Dragusin was the only player to last the full 90 in the last match. The Tottenham Hotspur defender should keep his spot here, but he may be joined in central defence by Deian Sorescu from the off in this match.
With FCSB forward Daniel Birligea forced to miss this month’s international friendlies due to injury, Ianis Hagi should continue to operate in the number 10 role behind Munteanu.
Lewis Koumas scored his first international goal for Wales against Ghana!
Despite spending most of his career on the left-wing, Wales’ boss Craig Bellamy revealed after the match against Ghana that he feels Koumas’ international future will be as a centre-forward. Koumas could therefore replace Wrexham’s Kieffer Moore in attack this week.
Dylan Lawlor and Joe Rodon both picked up knocks in the last match and are likely to sit out this one. Ben Davies and Harry Wilson were left out of the Welsh squad for this month’s fixtures through injury.

Our Romania vs Wales Prediction
Romania averaged over two goals per game during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, but they also conceded more than once on average per game and have only kept one clean sheet in their last nine matches across all competitions.
Wales are entering this fixture off the back of three consecutive 1-1 draws (regulation time). However, the Dragons have only recorded one clean sheet in their last eight games, and we feel they will struggle to shut out the home side in this one. Our Romania vs Wales prediction is BTTS.
Romania vs Wales Alternative Predictions
More than 2.5 goals
Romania have scored two or more goals in six of their last nine home matches, while Wales have only failed to score in two of their last eight away games.
Draw
Romania have only lost three of their last 10 home games, while each of Wales’ last three matches ended in 1-1 draws. We do not see a clear favourite in this match and feel it will end level at the final whistle.
