World number 91 Dominic Thiem and lucky loser Richard Gasquet will face off next at the Estoril Open. They will meet in the second round, with the winner playing either Roberto Bautista Agut, Daniel Altmaier, or Pedro Martinez next. Richard Gasquet lost in three sets to compatriot Lucas Pouille in his final qualifying match. This was his 11th loss in 22 outings this season. The veteran Frenchman has found the going tough this year. This has precipitated his falling out of the ATP top 100 for the first time in 19 years. The former world number seven is currently ranked 119th in the live ranking. Three of Gasquet’s defeats have come in six outings on clay. But as he is a former Estoril champion, he will be hopeful of bouncing back here. The 37-year-old triumphed here back in 2015 and is also a two-time runner-up. Gasquet won the first two of five matchups between him and Thiem.

Dominik Thiem has also struggled for form this season and in nine outings has won five times. Two of those wins have come on clay. He defeated Maximilian Marterer in three sets in the first round and is now one win from last season’s quarterfinal finish. Thiem has won the last three meetings with Gasquet. Their last encounter was last season on a clay surface in Monte-Carlo. Despite advancing to this round, Thiem has dropped two places to 93rd in the live ranking. Seeking to regain his past form, the former world number three has alternated between the tour and challenger circuit this season. This is only the second time that he is playing in the second round at an event this season.
