Red-hot Real Madrid are on rampaging form but face a tricky game against sixth placed Villarreal this weekend. Real go into the weekend in second place but 12 points behind leaders Barcelona. The visitors have all to play for as they only trail fourth placed Real Sociedad by four points. Madrid are coming off a thumping 4-0 win over arch rivals Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-finals to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg. While that has given them a ticket to the cup final, Los Blancos have little going for them in the league race. A lead of 12 points with 11 games to go is as good as title won, although Madrid would look to keep it tight until it is lost. A Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea next midweek is a distraction though, as Carlo Ancelotti’s men look to improve their recent form in the league – two wins from their last five La Liga matches.

Villarreal tried to stay in the top-four race and put pressure with a 2-0 win over Sociedad last matchday. That made it four wins out of five La Liga matches with the other ending in a draw. This sequence followed a run of four straight losses, so the Yellow Submarine is quickly making up for lost time. Having crashed out of the UEFA Europa Conference League, they also have no distractions to halt their campaign. Even two wins out of two on the road should give them confidence because Villarreal have enjoyed halting Madrid over the years. They have won 2-1 in the reverse fixture and have three draws and only one loss from their last five matches against them.
