by Steve Ashfield in FA Cup Predictions

Preston North End are the only remaining non-Premier League side in this season's FA Cup. The Championship club are home to Premier League Aston Villa in this FA Cup quarter-final. Can the Lilywhites cause a cup upset? Here's our match prediction.

These two clubs both won the FA Cup way back in the 19th century. If either they (or Nottingham Forest) win the cup this year, they will have lifted the trophy in three different centuries. That shows the long history of this fantastic competition. Preston last won the FA Cup in 1938 and it's 61 years since they last reached the final. Preston are 14th in the Championship and this is their first-quarter final since 1966.

Aston VIlla last lifted the trophy in 1957 and that was the seventh time they had won the FA Cup. Recent years have seen them struggling in this competition but the current side is ninth in the Premier League. They're also in the last eight of the Champions League so this is a tough game for Preston.

Preston North End - Aston Villa: Form Analysis

One of Preston's nicknames is 'The Invincibles' and that goes back to their unbeaten run in 1888-89 when winning the league and FA Cup double. Back in the 21st century they only seem to live up to that name at home in recent months.

They have gone 15 home league and cup games without defeat. At all venues though, only one of their last four matches has been won. Preston are 14th in the Championship and only nine points above the drop zone.

In this season's FA Cup they have had wins over Charlton Athletic, Wycombe Wanderers (needing a penalty shootout) and Burnley. All three games were played at home.

A welcome FA Cup run for Villa.

Aston VIlla have struggled in this competition in recent years. They went seven seasons without winning a match and this is their first quarter-final since 2015 when they went all the way to the final.

It's not been an easy route to the last eight for them. They have beaten West Ham, Spurs and Cardiff, all at home. The Villans are in good form though and have won each of their last four matches.

Preston North End & Aston Villa Squad Analysis

A mere glance at the two squads illustrates why Preston North End are the big underdogs in this tie. This is the FA Cup though and shocks do happen. Usually though, that is when the top teams leave out plenty of their best players. That might not be the case now we are down to the quarter-finals. The winners are in the last four and have a big day out at Wembley aka a massive financial payout and no club wants to miss out on that.

Preston have injury problems ahead of this quarter-final against Aston Villa. Ali McCann and Brad Potts are both doubtful for this match. Jack Whatnough is out and there are also doubts about Mlutin Osmajic.

Their last six goals have all been scored by different players. Only William Keane and Emil Ris have scored twice for Preston since mid-February.

Asensio has been a great signing for Viilla.

Marco Asensio has been a key player for Villa since joining them from PSG. He scored twice in both thei FA Cup fourth round win over Cardiff and the Champions Leageue home victory over Club Brugge. Preston will need to keep him quiet if they want to win this tie.

Preston North End - Aston Villa Key Points

  1. Aston Villa have won their last four matches with nine goals scored.
  2. Preston have reached this stage without having to face a Premier League side.
  3. Aston Villa have beaten two Premier League sides so far in this season's FA Cup.
  4. Aston Villa have become a good cup team this season with 11 wins in 15 games.

Our Preston North End vs Aston Villa Prediction

Aston Villa look to be on their way to Wembley. They have won the FA Cup seven times but the fifth of those was in 1913. After some poor recent FA Cup runs, Villa have come good this season and have already beaten two Premier League sides.

Preston are in the bottom half of the Championship and reached this stage without facing a Premier League club. This won't be easy for Villa but our main Preston v Aston Villa prediction is Aston Villa to win and lead at half and full time.
