Czechia, the joint hosts of this year’s EuroBasket Women’s Championship, will play Portugal next. They top Group C after the opening round of fixtures. Read on for our prediction of this match.
Portugal received a rude awakening in their tournament opener against Belgium. Ricardo Vasconcelos’ side, making its debut on the continental stage, was outclassed 81-52 by the defending champions.
Portugal trailed from the start to the end and shot just 29% from the field. Ana Carolina and Sofia da Silva tallied 13 and 11 points, respectively, and were the only players on the team with double figures.
Portugal, who had won their final two build-up games for the tournament, are ranked 40th in the world.
Czechia had a better start to the competition than Portugal and are seeking to maintain their 100% record. One of four host nations, Czechia, produced the biggest win of the tournament thus far after outclassing Montenegro 89-44.
Romana Ptackova’s side shot 53% from the field and 41% from three. They out-rebounded Montenegro 52-27 and won all four quarters by a double-digit margin.
Julia Reisingerova scored a game-high 14 points, while Veronika Vorackova, Emma Cechova, and Natalie Stoupalova managed at least 11 points each. Czechia have made the podium in EuroBasket twice and won gold in 2005.
