Pool B action at the 2026 EuroVolley continues on Friday with Portugal taking on Bulgaria in Sofia. Bulgaria have won the last two matches between these sides, and we fancy them to extend that record, as discussed in our match prediction.
Portugal will be hoping to get their first points of the 2026 European Championship in this match after suffering a straight-sets defeat to reigning European champions Poland on Thursday afternoon.
As a team, Portugal scored just 50 points while recording only five blocks in that defeat. Lourenço Garcia Martins led the team with 13 points. No other player finished in double digits.
Portugal are now on a four-match losing streak across all competitions. Their last win against their upcoming opponents came at the 2019 Volleyball Nations League.
After their historic run to the final at the World Championships last year, Bulgaria got this year’s European Championship started in style, beating North Macedonia 3-0 in their opener on Thursday.
Alexander Nikolov was the standout performer in that team, scoring 19 points including two aces. Venislav Antov finished on 15 points, while Simeon Nikolov picked up seven of the team’s 10 aces.
Bulgaria have now won seven of their last eight matches across all competitions, as well as seven of their last eight against Portugal.

Our Portugal vs Bulgaria Prediction
Portugal are one of the underdogs to progress from Pool B, and while they were not expected to get the better of Poland in their opener, the manner in which they lost the match did little to suggest that they will be able to defy the odds in this competition.
Bulgaria, on the other hand, made light work of North Macedonia in their opener and are looking in great shape. They have won seven of their last eight matches against this opponent, and we expect them to add to that tally here. Our Portugal vs Bulgaria prediction is Bulgaria -1.5.
