Group A knockout hopefuls Palmeiras from Brazil and Porto from Portugal will start their campaign in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup competition on Sunday. This is matchday one and will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. Our prediction is that Alviverde and the Dragons are likely to dish out a cagey affair, with under 2.5 goals a potential outcome.
Al Ahly and Inter Miami are the other clubs in the group from which the top two teams will advance to the knockout stage.
Palmeiras have long laid claim to being the first-ever club world champions after winning the Copa Rio in 1951. However, they are yet to win this tournament, but eight wins out of their last ten fixtures (W8, L2) give hope.
They are in the middle of the domestic campaign, stuck in a tight battle for the top spot. That could give them some competitive edge against a Porto side that hasn’t played competitively for a month.
The Portuguese are embarking on their first Club World Cup campaign and played two friendlies before the tournament, winning and losing one each.
That said, Porto ended their domestic campaign with five wins from six competitive matches, losing only once. Recreating that could be their best chance ahead of a first-ever game against a Brazilian club.
