The second game of the NBA’s 2026-27 season opening triple-header sees the New York Knicks raising their championship banner when they welcome the new-look Philadelphia 76ers to the Big Apple. The Knicks lifted the Larry O’Brien trophy for the first time since 1973 last season after beating the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. They retained most of their championship-winning squad, including the entire starting five, as they look to run it back.
New York finished third in the Eastern Conference last year with a 53-29 regular season record, which included a 30-10 mark at Madison Square Garden. This set up their dominant 16-3 playoff run en route to the title.
The 76ers underwent a summer of heavy changes. They acquired Jaylen Brown from the Celtics and managed to secure free agent LeBron James on a two-year deal. With Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey already on the team, Philly’s ‘big four’ has many backing them as serious title contenders.
Philadelphia finished seventh in the 2025-26 regular season with a 45-37 record and they posted a decent 22-19 mark on the road. They were swept in the second round of the playoffs by the Knicks, and will have revenge on their minds here.
