Morocco open their 2023 Men’s World Handball Championships campaign with a match against the USA. This is the opening game in preliminary round Group and the other two countries they’ll be facing are Egypt and Croatia. These are the two countries that were in pots 3 and 4 when the draw was made and it’s likely this will prove to be the match that decides who gets out the group and who goes into the President’s Cup. Morocco finished third in the 2022 African Championships to qualify for this tournament. They had gone 14 years without playing in the world championships but in 2021 could only finish in 29th place.  Their highest ever placing was 19th in 1999. Recent form has seen them lose three friendlies this month being defeated by Belgium, Poland and Iran, though only the defeat by the Iranians saw them lose by more than two goals.

The USA are in their first world championships since 2001. They won the Nor.Ca. Championships last year to end the long wait. Greenland were beaten in the final and they’ll find these world championships a lot tougher but it’s good progress for the Americans. Earlier this month they took part in the Golden League event held in Norway. All three games against Brazil, Portugal and Norway were lost and another loss looks on the cards here.
