Manchester City vs Sheffield United Prediction & Betting Tips - FA Cup

by Devesh Jaganath in FA Cup Prediction

The eagerly awaited FA Cup semi-finals will unfold this weekend, as Manchester City look to become the first side to book their places in the final when they take on the dark horses, Sheffield United, on Saturday afternoon. The Citizens last lifted English football’s oldest trophy in 2019 when they demolished Watford 6-0 in the final, while the Blades will be hoping to bring an end to an almost century-long wait, last winning in an FA Cup final in 1925 when they overcame Cardiff City. The winner of this David versus Goliath battle will return to Wembley Stadium for the final on Saturday, June 3, 2023, to take on the winner of Brighton and Hove Albion vs Manchester United, who will contest the second semi-final on Sunday afternoon.

The gulf in class between these sides can clearly be seen when we take a look at the odds, where the reigning Premier League champions are returning just 1.14 to progress to the final. A draw will return 9.0 on your wager, while a win for Sheffield United is currently returning a whopping 15.0. Manchester City have scored 14 goals in the four matches they’ve played in this competition and are yet to concede. However, Sheffield United historically have put up a good fight against Manchester City, having never lost by a margin of greater than two goals to the Citizens in their last seven encounters. Balancing those facts and while City will be eyeing up another big win here, the -1 handicap looks like a good, low-risk option priced at reasonable odds of 1.4, while the -2 option will return 2.0 to its backers if it lands. On the point of goals, it’s hard to look past the sensational Erling Haaland, who has already netted 48 times in 41 appearances this season, three of which have come in this tournament. The Norwegian to score anytime is priced at a very tempting 1.4; however, odds of 1.8 about Julian Alvarez finding the net cannot be overlooked, with the Argentine also having found the net on three occasions in this tournament and is tipped to make the starting lineup on Saturday.

Manchester City - Sheffield United: Form Analysis

Manchester City will come into this match in fantastic spirits after seeing off Bayern Munich in midweek to book their spot in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals and also saw their league ambitions reignited after Arsenal failed to put away West Ham United last weekend, which reduces the gap in the league table to four points. City also still have a game in hand and are scheduled to take on the Gunners next weekend. Manchester City are unbeaten in their last 15 matches in all competitions, which includes 12 wins and three draws. They played the Championship leaders Burnley in the last round of the FA Cup and came away as 6-0 winners, with Haaland bagging a hat-trick and Alvarez picking up a brace.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United are just one win away from securing second-spot in the Championship, which will be enough to earn them automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Over their last six matches, Sheffield United have won five and lost one, with that solitary loss coming at the hands of Burnley earlier this month. The Blades knocked out Blackburn Rovers in a nail-biting finish in the last round, which followed arguably their best performance of the season, where they held off Tottenham Hotspur to earn a 1-0 win in the 5th round. In terms of head-to-head stats, Manchester City hold the upper hand, having won each of the last four encounters between these sides.

Manchester City & Sheffield United Squad Analysis

In terms of injuries, Manchester City have just one concern after Nathan Ake was reported to have pulled his hamstring during the midweek encounter against Bayern Munich. Phil Foden has made a full recovery and will be pushing for a start which will be a welcomed prospect for Pep Guardiola, who pointed out that his team was exhausted in his post-match press conference in midweek. Riyadh Mahrez and Julian Alvarez are also expected to return to the starting lineup, having been involved in every match in this tournament so far. Sheffield United will have to contend without the midfield duo of James McAtee and hero of the last round, Tommy Doyle, as both are ineligible to compete against their parent club. Aside from those two, Enda Stevens, Ben Osborn, Rhian Brewster, Jack O’Connell, and Rhys Norrington-Davies have all been ruled out for this one through respective injuries. Norwood, Fleck, and Berge are expected to take up the duties in the engine room, while Billy Sharp could spearhead the attack in place of Ollie McBurnie.

Our Manchester City vs Sheffield United Prediction

The odds in this match shouldn’t be used as an indication of how poor Sheffield United are, but rather, illustrates how strong Manchester City are. The Blades have held their own in this fixture and have been one of the few teams that have not been beaten by the huge margins City have become known for winning by. The Citizens are also expected to ring the changes in this match, which could see some of the attacking players rested, but they should have more than enough class among their ranks to win this one by at least a two-goal margin. Therefore, our Manchester City v Sheffield United prediction is on the handicap market for Manchester City -1.
