Luke Littler will kick off his 2026 World Matchplay title defence on Saturday evening against Niko Springer. The Nuke is the favourite to win this competition this year, and our prediction is that he will have little trouble getting through the first round.
Luke Littler enters Winter Gardens as the defending champion and the number one-ranked player in the world. He beat James Wade 18-13 in the final of this competition last year.
The Nuke is having an incredible season, with the World Championship, UK Open, Premier League, Saudi Arabia Masters, and World Cup of Darts titles already under his belt this year.
Littler has won seven of his last 10 matches across all competitions, as well as his only previous encounter against his upcoming opponent.
Meanwhile, Niko Springer arrives at this competition as an unseeded ProTour Qualifier and ranked 42nd in the PDC Order of Merit. The German is making his World Matchplay debut this year.
Meenzer Bub has not won a major title this year, but he has notched up a few notable results, including beating Gary Anderson at the European Darts Grand Prix and Michael van Gerwen on the Euro Tour.
Springer has split his last 10 matches, five wins and five defeats, but this is easily the toughest opening draw he could have cracked for this tournament.

Our Luke Littler vs Niko Springer Prediction
Niko Springer had a solid 2025, in which he notched up a European Tour title in Budapest, which paved his way into the world’s top 50, but this is the worst opening draw the German could have asked for.
Luke Littler has been incredible this year, and while he was not able to win the Nordic or US Darts Masters titles since his Premier League triumph, it’s difficult to find a reason why he will not get through to the second round fairly easily. Our Luke Littler vs Niko Springer prediction is Luke Littler -2.5.
