Liverpool vs Real Madrid Prediction & Betting Tips - Champions League

by Steve Ashfield | in Champions League Prediction

Liverpool face Real Madrid in a repeat of the 2021/22 Champions League final. This time they meet in the last sixteen after Liverpool finished second in their group and Real Madrid won theirs. Liverpool have had an inconsistent season and may even need to win this season's Champions League to be in Europe's top club competition in 2023/24. They have shown some signs of a return to form and are always difficult to beat at home in Europe. Real Madrid are now eight points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona. They are in good form though and scoring plenty of goals. This should be a great European night at Anfield.

Liverpool - Real Madrid: Form Analysis

Liverpool are eighth in the English Premier League but have won their last two fixtures. A 2-0 home win over Everton was followed by an impressive 2-0 win at Newcastle with both goals scored in the first 17 minutes. Darwin and Gakpo are both in scoring form but it's the two clean sheets that will please Klopp. Two successive clean sheets have been kept at Anfield but against struggling Chelsea and Everton. Real Madrid will pose a much tougher threat to them. Liverpool won all three of their home group matches with only Ajax scoring against them. Their last four home Champions League games have all been won with only Inter beating them in the last 12.

Real Madrid are second in La Liga and struggling to stay in contention. They  won their last game 2-0 at Osasuna and have now scored 15 goals in their last four league and cup games. While Real Madrid finished top of their Champions League group, they had their home form to thank for that with three wins and nine goals. On the road, Real only earned four points from three games. Both teams scored in two of those away fixtures at Shakhtar and in the 3-2 loss at Leipzig. Real have scored in nine of their last ten away Champions League fixtures.

Liverpool & Real Madrid Squad Analysis

Liverpool will be hoping that Darwin Nunez will be fit for this match against Real Madrid. He had to go off in Saturday's game against Newcastle after suffering a shoulder injury. It's hoped intensive treatment may see him able to face Real Madrid. If he is unable to play, his likely replacement will be either Roberto Firmino or Diogo Jota. Oh how they wish Mane hadn't been sold. Gakpo is in top form and will again start for Liverpool. Teenager Stefan Bajcetic is again likely to be in the starting line-up.

Real Madrid have a fitness worry over Karim Benzena. He didn't play against Osasuna due to muscular fatigue. He is expected to play against Liverpool and may well benefit from the rest he's had. They will be without midfielders Toni Kroos and Aurelien Tchouameni who are both ill. They will instead field Dani Ceballos and Eduardo Camavinga.

Liverpool - Real Madrid Key Points

  1. Real Madrid have scored in nine of their last ten away Champions League games.
  2. Real Madrid have scored at least twice in six of their last nine away Champions League fixtures.
  3. Both teams have scored in four of the last six Real Madrid away Champions League matches.
  4. Three of the last five Liverpool home games have seen both teams score.
  5. Liverpool have only failed to score in two of their last 16 home competitive games,

Our Liverpool vs Real Madrid Prediction

Both of these clubs have work to do in their domestic leagues. They now turn to the Champions League and a dull game is not expected. Liverpool have closed the gap on the top four in the Premier League and kept two consecutive clean sheets. They still look vulnerable at times though and have had some heavy defeats this season. Real Madrid recently became world club champions and are scoring plenty of goals. Our Liverpool v Real Madrid prediction is for both teams to score.

Liverpool vs Real Madrid - Other Interesting Predictions

Liverpool to win

Liverpool's form has picked up in recent games. They are always strong at Anfield, especially in the Champions League. The draw with Benfica and loss to Inter came when weakened sides were fielded by the Reds. Liverpool have one loss in their last 24 home competitive fixtures.

Cody Gakpo to score

Cody Gakpo to score looks a good bet here. We all saw how well he played in the World Cup and he's been on target for Liverpool in their last two matches.
