The Champions League arrives at Anfield for the first time in the 2024-25 season as Liverpool prepare to take on Bologna on Wednesday night. The Reds are currently in seventh place in the League Phase standings, while I Rossoblu are 18th after the first round of matches. Check out our match prediction below!
It will be a historic moment when these two sides lock horns in Merseyside, marking the first time ever that they will face off in any competition. The visitors have faced three English teams in European competition in the past, with the most recent being Fulham in the 2002 Intertoto Cup.
The bookmakers view the hosts as massive favourites here, with Bologna currently showing up as the second-biggest outsider to win their matchday two fixture of the 18 matches scheduled this week. Liverpool - Bologna: Form Analysis
Liverpool have made a very promising start to the 2024-25 season, as they took top spot in the Premier League standings over the weekend with a 2-1 win away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
That result extended the Reds' current win streak to four in a row, which began with a 3-1 victory over AC Milan in the first round of this competition. In that match, Arne Slot’s side showed tremendous character, recovering from an early goal concession to run-out winners.
The only blemish on their otherwise excellent record this term was a shock 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest following the international break. On either side of that result, though, Liverpool have scored two or more goals in every match.

Meanwhile, after a sensational 2023-24 campaign, Bologna have got the current league season off to an underwhelming start. They are down in 13th place in Serie A and have managed just one win in their first six matches (W1 D4 L1).
In round one of this competition, I Rossoblu attempted a total of 17 shots against Shakhtar Donetsk but failed to find the back of the net with any, eventually playing out a goalless draw.
On the road, the Felsinians have played three times this season, splitting their results one win, one draw and a loss, though they did score two goals in each of their last two outings.

Andy Robertson was withdrawn near the end of the match against Wolves with a knock but Arne Slot confirmed in his post-match press conference that it was not serious, and expects the left-back to be available in midweek.
One player that will not be available for the Reds this week is Harvey Elliot, who suffered a fractured foot on international duty earlier this month and is still working his way back to full fitness.
Darwin Nunez missed the victory over Wolves with an illness and is flagged as a doubt for this week’s match!
For Bologna, Lewis Ferguson has not featured at all this season and is expected to miss the remainder of the calendar year after undergoing cruciate ligament surgery in April.
Nicolo Cambiaghi, meanwhile, may miss the rest of this season, also due to a cruciate ligament tear, while Oussama El Azzouzi is ruled out for the foreseeable future with a fairly serious knee injury.
