Larne and Rigas will face off in the second leg of the Champions League first qualifying round at Inver Park on Wednesday evening. The visitors have a commanding 3-0 lead heading into this match. The winner of this tie will move on to face Bodo/Glimt in round two of qualifying.
The NIFL Premiership champions have it all to do this week after they were completely outplayed on their trip to Latvia last week and now face a huge task of having to overturn a three-goal deficit.
Having not played a competitive match since the end of April, the Inver Reds looked off the pace from the off in the first leg and found themselves a goal down before the break. After the interval, things got worse as they conceded a second three minutes after the restart and never really looked likely to get back in the contest.
Larne are on a four-match winning streak at home in all competitions and have scored two or more goals in each of those games. They will need another solid attacking display to stand a chance of making a comeback in this match.
Meanwhile, Rigas have already set one foot in the second round and have a comfortable lead to protect coming into this match. Martins Kigurs, Daniels Balodis and Stefan Panic all got on the scoresheet for the side last week.
The Latvian champions are in the midst of their league season and secured a 2-1 victory in their domestic cup over the weekend. That victory extended their current winning streak to six matches in all competitions, while they are unbeaten in their last 13 (W12 D1 L0).
Rigas’ last defeat came over two months ago to Valmiera, and that was the only defeat the side has conceded in their last 11 away games across all competitions. The visitors have scored two or more goals in each of their last nine matches and are the bookmakers’ favourite in this one.
