Third seed Jessica Pegula is through to the second round at the US Open, where she’ll face wildcard Sofia Kenin. These two had easy sailing to this round to set up their seventh career meeting. Pegula has the head-to-head advantage, and our prediction tips her to march on.

Pegula has reached at least the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows in the last two seasons, and she will be hoping to improve on her runner-up finish here in 2024.

Marking her 14th appearance in this event, Pegula will also be going for a first Grand Slam title. Before arriving at Flushing Meadows, Pegula had lost the Cincinnati final. She didn’t dwell on that, starting with a straight set win over Gabriela Ruse.

Kenin carries into this match a good profile at the Grand Slam level, but the last few years haven’t been her best. She won the 2020 Australian Open title and soon after added the WTA Lyon gong.

Six years down the line she hasn’t added to the titles and would love to end the drought here. Kenin easily booked her second-round slot courtesy of a straight-set win over veteran Venus Williams.

That was only her seventh win in 27 matches, most of which have been in the first round. The American has a 1-4 record in the second round and hasn’t progressed past the third round this season. She is 112th in the live ranking.
