Both of these countries have already made it through to the last 16 of the 2023 Men's European Volleyball Championships. Germany are in third place but level on points with opponents Serbia and with a game in hand. The Germans are ranked three places below Serbia in the latest world rankings. They have won all three of their matches in Pool A but against the sides below them in the table. After this match they finish the pool with a game against pool leaders and second favorites to win the tournament, Italy. Germany began this pool with a couple of 3-0 wins over Estonia and Switzerland with only 111 points conceded. A third straight win followed when the Germans defeated Belgium but that was far tougher. They lost the first two sets to the Belgians but recovered to get a vital 3-2 win. That may well be their last victory of the pool with these two tough matches to play.

Serbia have played a game more than the Germans and this is their final game in the pool. Of their four matches played so far, three have been won with the other a defeat to Italy. The Serbs began with a comfortable straight sets victory over Switzerland and then beat Belgium for the loss of one set. Then came the expected loss to Italy without winning a set.  That wasn't surprising as the Italians haven't lost a set in their four matches in this pool. They bounced back well from that defeat by beating Estonia 3-0, though the last two sets were both close. They are our confident tip to beat Germany and finish in second place.
