France produced a stunning comeback on matchday one, defeating Turkey 71-69. Jean-Aime Toupane’s players trailed for much of the game and entered the fourth quarter behind 54-48.
They would win the quarter 23-15, taking full advantage of Turkey’s turnovers. France, who have made a podium finish in each of the last eight EuroBasket Championships, were led by Janelle Salaun’s 22 points. The two-time continental champions are unbeaten in five consecutive competitive games.
Greece were the best-performing team on opening day. Petros Prekas’s men dominated the Swiss in their opener and won 87-65. This was the biggest win margin and the most points scored on the day.
Greece, who are one of the four joint hosts, will hope the home crowd allows them to snap their seven-game losing streak against France. The 21st-ranked nation in the world, Greece, shot 43% from the field against the Swiss.
They also dominated on the glass, 43/30. Mariella Fasoula scored a game-high 21 points, with Elena Bosgana, Robyn Parks, and Eleanna Christinaki pouring in at least 12 points each.
