In their last game before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, England will face Costa Rica on Wednesday at the Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando. This friendly between the ‘Three Lions’ and ‘Los Ticos’ is likely to see the English finetune their scoring record, so our match prediction is for more than 2.5 goals to be scored.
Thomas Tuchel’s side are one of the favourites to win this year’s tournament, where they are drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. Having come through the qualifiers, winning all eight matches without conceding a goal, England have set a benchmark for this competition. That said, their recent performances have been below par.
Costa Rica failed to navigate through the third round in the CONCACAF qualifiers, drawing four of their six matches (W1, L1). Following that, they have played three qualifiers against World Cup-bound sides, conceding ten goals. Will that trend continue with England making merry and getting some scoring form ahead of the big tournament? Read more for our analysis, team news, and match predictions for this friendly.

England - Costa Rica: Form Analysis
England struggled to overcome New Zealand 1-0 in a friendly last weekend, with Harry Kane saving them the blushes. That result made it exactly one goal for England in each of their last three friendlies (W1, D1, L1).
That loss (1-0) came against a strong Japanese side, so England and Thomas Tuchel have a lot to ponder. Fielding different XIs in each half can be an excuse from Tuchel, as England stretched their record to seven wins from their last nine matches (D1, L1).
England have lost four of their last nine friendlies (W3, D2).
Costa Rica don’t have a World Cup to plan for after missing out on qualification. The absence seems to be just a tip of their problems, as ‘Los Ticos’ went on to lose two of their last three friendlies (D1). They conceded ten goals in aggregate during those matches, with all games coming against teams playing in the World Cup.
Quite interestingly, Costa Rica have a good record in games they played in the USA. They are unbeaten in their last four such games (W2, D2) during regulation time, although doing so against one of the World Cup favourites could be tough.

England & Costa Rica Squad Analysis
England have no injuries to worry about after the New Zealand match. The biggest boost for the ‘Three Lions’ is the presence of the four-man Arsenal contingent - Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze, Bukayo Saka, and Noni Madueke - available. They missed out on the last game after their participation in the final of the UEFA Champions League.
England could line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, but it would be interesting to see if Kane will start as the striker. Saka is expected to line up as a winger, while Marcus Rashford may keep his place after an encouraging display against New Zealand.
England have won the last ten matches that Rashford scored.
Costa Rica won’t have Joel Campbell in the squad, as he wasn’t called up to the team. The trio of Kenneth Vargas, Warren Madrigal, and Alejandro Bran were axed from the squad due to disciplinary reasons.
Los Ticos lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation in their last game against Colombia, while they have usually used five at the back. That could see Manfred Ugalde lining up as the lone striker for Costa Rica looking to make it an eighth straight game that his national side wins when he scores.

Our England vs Costa Rica Prediction
England are among the top favourites to win the World Cup, although their recent performances have done little to suggest the same. In each of their last three friendlies, England have scored just one goal, which is definitely not in line with their aspirations. Costa Rica could be the right opponent to change that script, as they conceded ten goals in their last three international friendlies.
With a desperate need to improve their scoring form, England are likely to push ahead, so our England vs Costa Rica prediction is more than 2.5 goals.
England vs Costa Rica Alternative Predictions
England wins
Is there an upset in the offing? England are heavy favourites to win here, if not the World Cup. Costa Rica’s poor recent run gives additional impetus to those hopes, so we are backing an English win here.
