Australia are ranked 11th in the latest world basketball rankings. They open their 2019 FIBA World Basketball Cup campaign with a game against Canada. This is a Group H game and also in this group are Lithuania and Senegal. It's a tough group and both of these teams will want to get the group off to a winning start. Australia have a few injury problems so won't be as dominant as they'd like to be. They played two exhibitions against world champions, the USA, in recent weeks and recorded one win over the number one ranked team in the world. Australia reached the semi-finals at the 2016 Summer Olympics and made it to the last sixteen at the 2014 World Cup. Two years agao they won the Asian Cup so have a good international record.

Canada are ranked 23rd in the world. This is the first time they have reached the World Cup finals since 2010. Their last appearance saw them finish 22nd in that tournament. Their best ever World Cup performance was in 1982 when finishing sixth. They have played Australia twice in the World Cup warm-ups and beat them in the first of those games. Australia improved in the second though to earn a win. With a victory over the USA too, Australia can get this world cup off to a winning start.
