Bayer Leverkusen are third in the Bundesliga after beating Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday. They host sixth placed Wolfsburg who can draw level with them on points if winning this game. The win over Dortmund was an important one for Leverkusen. It was their first league victory since mid-December when beating FC Koln. That was their eighth win in nine league games but it was followed by a run of three losses and a draw. It was a tough fixture list though with the defeats inflicted on them by top eight sides Bayern Munich, Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt, the last two both being away losses. It was nearly four straight defeats as they had to come from behind to get a point at home to Werder Bremen. Then came Tuesday when they beat Dortmund 2-1 at home. A goal 10 minutes from time secured them the three points, their fourth home league win of the season. Only one of their eight has been lost, the home defeat to top-of-the-table Bayern Munich and it took a 90th minute Lewandowski goal to secure that win. Only three of their last 16 home league games have been lost, two to Bayern Munich and the other in May to....Wolfsburg.
Tuesday night also saw Wolfsburg get a win. They beat Mainz (one from bottom in the Bundesliga) 2-0 away but had to wait til the second half for their goals. As is the case with their opponents, the win ended a poor run of league form. Wolfsburg had gone three league matches without a win with two draws (both of which they trailed in) and an away loss to Borussia Dortmund. They had only lost one of their last 13 matches in the Bundesliga before that. Away form has seen them win only two of their nine league games. Only two have been lost though (at Bayern and Dortmund) with five ending up level. Only in two of their last 18 away league fixtures have they failed to score but seven of the last ten have seen both teams score. This should be an open match and the tip is for both teams to get on the scoresheet.
