Blinkova is dealing with yet another early exit from her latest event. She suffered a straight-set defeat to Kimberly Birrell in the first round at Cincinnati. That was her seventh loss in the first round this season, and it left her 74th in the live rank.

The Russian has compiled a shaky 22-21 record and has now suffered straight-set defeats in six of her last 10 outings.

Mertens is on a much stronger run and has had title runs in Singapore and Hertogenbosch. The Belgian has actually been to three finals this season and lost once. She couldn’t, however, replicate that in Cincinnati last week.

The 29-year-old lost in three sets to Elena Rybakina in the third round. That coming after another early exit in Montreal will worry her. It is even more concerning that she dropped at least a set in seven of her last 10 matches.

What will lift her spirits, though, is the fact that she has gone past her opening round at 15 of her 17 events this season. She enters this match placed 21st in the live rank.
