Fifth placed Atletico Madrid have the chance to move up into the Champions League places. They travel to Almeria who are 14th in La Liga and only two points above the relegation zone. Atletico are a point behind fourth placed Real Betis but the fourth placed side don't have a game this weekend after taking part in the Spanish Super Cup. Atletico's form since the Spanish season began with two Copa del Rey victories and a home win over bottom-of-the-table Elche. Their most recent game saw them lose 1-0 at home to Barcelona. Atletico do need to improve their away record as the last two (both played before the World Cup break) were lost to Cadiz and Mallorca. Before that though they had won five and drawn one of their opening six away league matches.

Almeria have only played a couple of games since the season resumed. That's because they had already been knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Arenteiro who are in the Segunda Division RFEF. The two La Liga matches played by Almeria haven't gone too well for them. They managed to get a draw at Cadiz but did take the lead in that match. Their most recent game saw them beaten 2-0 at home by Real Sociedad. That was their third home league loss of the season but they have won the other five. This is their first time in La Liga for seven years and home form could be what keeps them up. They'd won four home league matches in a row before the recent loss. None of the teams they beat in that winning run are currently in the top eight of La Liga and this looks a tough task for them.
