Hugo Broos Eyeing New Role With Bafana Bafana After Retiring as Head Coach
Broos Announces Retirement as South African Head Coach
South African football is set to enter a new era following the confirmation that now-former head coach Hugo Broos will not continue his role with the national team after their historic run to the knockout stages at the 2026 World Cup.
The Belgian tactician revealed that he would step down from the head coaching role ahead of the World Cup, but his future with Bafana Bafana had been the subject of speculation following the tournament when he suggested that his final decision had not been made.
However, last week, Belgian media house Voetbalnieuws released quotes from an interview with the 74-year-old confirming that he has now decided to call time on his tenure with the national team. According to the publication, Broos said:
"Will I continue as a coach after all? No, it is irreversible! If they need me for something else, perhaps in scouting, that is something else. But football is no longer going to be a part of my life 24 hours a day.”
Broos has been in charge of Bafana Bafana for the past five years and has been key to turning the fortunes of the team. Under his guidance, South Africa reached the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final for the first time in over two decades in 2024 before qualifying for the World Cup after a 16-year hiatus.
Across his career with the national team, Broos oversaw 60 matches for South Africa, marking the longest tenure for a Bafana coach since re-admission in 1992. His record during that period read as 26 wins, 22 draws, and just 12 losses in all competitions.
Broos Devastated By Passing of Jayden Adams
South African football fans were left stunned this past weekend when news outlets on the morning of Saturday, July 11, revealed the shocking death of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams.
Adams was part of Broos’ squad at the 2026 World Cup and was considered one of the nation's most promising players. Despite spending time back home in Belgium, Broos was one of the first to comment on the unexpected passing of the 25-year-old Adams. He said:
“My deepest condolences to the family of Jayden. It is with great disbelief that I heard the news. There are no words to express my sadness. As a father, I send the family my support in those difficult moments. Bafana Bafana has lost a great talent too soon and too young. May his soul rest in peace.”
Adams played in all three group matches for South Africa, including their incredible 1-0 victory over South Korea that ultimately secured their progress to the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history.
