South Africa played to a 1-1 draw against Jamaica in their final warm-up match before their 2026 World Cup campaign on Saturday. Bafana Bafana will now turn their focus to the global tournament opener against Mexico at Estadio Azteca on Thursday, June 11.

South Africa Extend Winless Run With Stalemate Against Reggae Boys

The South African national football team is set to return to the World Cup stage for the first time in 16 years later this week and played their final warm-up match ahead of the tournament against Jamaica behind closed doors on Saturday at Estadio Hidalgo.

Despite various reports indicating that the match ended in a 1-0 victory for Bafana Bafana, SAFA later confirmed that the final scoreline was a 1-1 draw, which also confirmed our football predictions

Burnley striker and one of South Africa’s key players for the upcoming tournament, Lyle Foster, brought an end to his goal drought by giving Bafana the lead in the first half, but his effort was cancelled out by Jamaica’s Dwayne Atkinson after the break.

The result meant that South Africa will now enter the World Cup winless in their last five matches (D3 L2) in all competitions since losing to Cameroon 2-1 in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco earlier this year.

Hugo Broos now has plenty to do to prepare his side for the tournament opener on Thursday afternoon, when they will take on Mexico - the same team they faced in the opening match of the 2010 World Cup - at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Broos Unimpressed By Bafana Showing against Jamaica

Given that the match between South Africa and Jamaica was played behind closed doors and with virtually no media coverage, SAFA released a statement after the match that included Hugo Broos’ thoughts on his side’s performance on Saturday night. The Belgian tactician said:

“The performance was not what I expected. I think we have to analyse the game very well and see what was really wrong and try to make it better in the next few days so that we are ready for the first game against Mexico.

“I thought we were close, but again, it was, for me, a disappointing game this afternoon. We have to do more, much more, than what we did this afternoon to have good results in the World Cup in the next few weeks.”

South Africa have been drawn into Group A for the 2026 World Cup, alongside Mexico, South Korea and Czechia.
