Even Contest Expected in 2026 Nedbank Cup Final

The Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane will burst into life this evening when Durban City and TS Galaxy step out to contest for the richest cup prize in South African football - the Nedbank Cup!

The Citizens are hoping to lift the coveted trophy for the first time ever, while the Rockets' only triumph in this competition came in 2019, when they defeated Kaizer Chiefs 1-0, and another close contest is expected tonight, according to our Durban City vs TS Galaxy FC prediction. 

Both sides have undergone major changes this season. City have had four different managers this term in Gavin Hunt, Sinethemba Badela, and Ernst Middendorp, while Pitso Dladla is now at the helm on a temporary basis and chasing his first career title as a manager. 

Galaxy, meanwhile, opted to part ways with Adnan Beganovic less than two weeks out from the Nedbank Cup final. Bernard Parker is serving as interim boss and was handed the reins just seven days ago. He now has to lead the team to a major final in just his second match in charge. 

Parker was part of the AmaKhosi side that was defeated by TS Galaxy in that 2019 final, and the former Bafana Bafana international has urged his current team to channel the spirit of their 2019 cup heroes as they look for a silver lining in what has been a tough domestic season for them. 

City and Galaxy Need to Overcome Poor Form to Claim Nedbank Cup Title

Adding to expectations that this will be a close contest is the form that both these sides are carrying into the 2026 Nedbank Cup final. Durban City enter the match on a four-match winless streak, which included a 5-2 drubbing at the hands of lowly Magesi FC. 

City’s downturn has been quite unexpected, as they had only suffered a single defeat in their previous nine matches across all competitions before this period, which saw them reach the top five in the South African PSL just a few weeks ago. 

Galaxy, on the other hand, have been in troubling form for a while now, as their only wins across their last 15 matches have come in this competition. However, they did overcome Mamelodi Sundowns in the last 16 and have only conceded once in this season’s Nedbank Cup.

That type of defensive stability will be key to the Rockets’ chances of success, but they have historically struggled against the City (previously Maritzburg United), losing six and drawing one of their nine previous encounters across all competitions against the KZN outfit (W2).
