Manchester City Break the Bank to Revamp Midfield
This summer’s deadline day certainly did not disappoint, and Manchester City dominated the headlines by announcing the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea just moments before the window slammed shut last night.
The Citizens reportedly splashed out £125m to acquire the services of the Argentine midfielder, who became the fourth player to move to a Premier League team this summer with a price tag of over £100m, after Morgan Rogers, Bradley Barcola, and his new teammate Elliot Anderson.
City also left it late to confirm the signing of Iliman Ndiaye, who arrived from Everton to complete the team’s midfield revamp, which included bringing in Anderson and teenage starlet Ayyoub Bouaddi for around £80m from Ligue 1 outfit Lille last week.
Fernandez is now set to reunite with Enzo Maresca, who he worked under during the Italian’s tenure at Chelsea. City’s most notable midfield departures included Nico González to Newcastle, Rodri to Barcelona, and Bernardo Silva to Real Madrid.
No Further Reinforcements for Arsenal on Deadline Day
While much of the latter part of the transfer window was marked by reports of Arsenal looking to sign Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid, the Argentine ultimately remained in Spain, and the Gunners opted against any further acquisitions on deadline day.
Instead, outgoings dominated the Premier League champion’s deadline day activity!
- Gabriel Jesus: Had fallen in Mikel Arteta’s pecking order behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres. The Brazilian became the third EPL player to move to Barcelona this summer following Anthony Gordon and Rodri.
- Gabriel Martinelli: This is all but a done deal, with Martinelli set to join Al-Hilal. The Saudi Arabian transfer window remains open until September 6, and with a reported fee of £55m incoming, Martinelli will become the Gunners’ biggest sale in history.
- Ethan Nwaneri: Completed a loan move to Borussia Dortmund following the departure of Fábio Vieira to Hamburg on a full sale.
Other Clubs Headline Transfer Business on Deadline Day
Crystal Palace ended the summer transfer window with three signings yesterday, bringing in veteran Ben Chilwell from Strasbourg, Quinten Timber from Marseille and Darío Osorio from Midtjylland. Borna Sosa was a late exit, heading to Cologne on a loan deal.
Hull City were the busiest Premier League club on deadline day, adding six more before the cutoff to reach a final tally of 18 signings!
The six deadline day moves for the Tigers included Tim Iroegbunam from Everton, Ilyas Ansah from Union Berlin, Sorba Thomas from Stoke City, Christos Mouzakitis from Olympiacos, Brooke Norton-Cuffy from Genoa, and a loan move for Robinio Vaz.
Sunderland brought in the highly rated Juan Riquelme Angulo Caicedo. Manuel Thomas became the third former Real Madrid player to join Fulham. Liverpool’s only transfer on the final day of the summer window was 18-year-old Belgian shot-stopper Lucca Brughmans on loan.
