Arsenal Favourites to Defend Premier League Title
Matchday 1 of the 2026-27 season kicked off at the Emirates Stadium, and Arsenal firmly announced themselves as the team to beat this term, as they cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Coventry City and confirmed our Premier League predictions.
The Gunners dominated the fixture in almost every statistical category!
Beyond their three goals, the Gunners had 65% possession, 20 shots at goal (6 on target), and overperformed their 1.88 xG, while only allowing 0.20 xGA. Indeed, the defending champions were rock-solid at the back and looked lethal going forward.
In terms of personnel, summer signing Christos Tzolis is already establishing himself as a fan favourite. Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori were exceptional in defence and in bombing down the flanks on both ends, and Bukayo Saka is looking close to being back to his very best.
While there is still a chance that Mikel Arteta’s side could make a late push to sign Julian Alvarez before the transfer window slams shut at the end of this month, Kai Havertz looked sharp leading the line, recording five touches in the opposition box and scoring the team’s first goal of the match.
Given how Arsenal dominated Manchester City in the Community Shield a week earlier, and with the likes of Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Aston Villa all producing far from impressive displays in their season openers, the Gunners looked primed to be this season’s front-runners.
Manchester Clubs Look Vulnerable In Season Openers
There were concerns over how Manchester City would get on following the departure of Pep Guardiola, Rodri, and Bernardo Silva, and, fair to say, the Citizens did not do enough to ease those concerns in their opening match of the season against Bournemouth.
The Citizens did manage to come away from that fixture with a 2-1 victory, but it required goals from Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol in the final five minutes to overturn the 1-0 deficit, while Erling Haaland failed to get on the scoresheet and looked a little off the pace.
Man United suffer shock 2-0 defeat to Hull City!
There has been lots of criticism over the Red Devils’ recruitment this summer, with many fans feeling that the club had failed to successfully replace Casemiro or find suitable alternatives for Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Benjamin Sesko.
Matheus Cunha started the last match in a false 9 role and failed to make much of an impact, while the new midfield duo of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans were outdone by their opposing numbers in Matt Crooks and Regan Slater.
Brighton Make the Biggest Impression on Opening Week
Aside from Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion were the most impressive team on the opening week of the Premier League season, as they put Aston Villa to the sword to secure three points with a stunning 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Amex Stadium.
Perhaps the most impressive part of the Seagulls' performance was that all four of their goals came inside the opening half hour of the match, with Jack Hinshelwood playing the starring role, scoring twice in the space of just two minutes.
Over the course of the 90, Brighton maintained 73% possession and fired 21 shots at goal, six of which were on target. They also recorded six big chances and an xG of 3.77, while only conceding 0.28 xGA, with the Villans failing to create a single big chance.
