Jonny Clayton Exacts Revenge In Auckland Final
Jonny Clayton defied the odds and confirmed our darts predictions by beating his compatriot Gerwyn Price in the final to claim his maiden New Zealand Darts Masters title in Auckland on Saturday.
The Ferret had an excellent showing on finals day, beating top seed Gian van Veen and James Wade before taking down Price 8-4 with a superb 124 checkout on the bull to secure his second World Series of Darts title.
Clayton came flying out of the blocks, pinning finishes of 72, 158, 80, and 62 to storm to a 7-1 lead. Price then produced a slight fightback late in the match, winning three legs in a row, but Clayton closed out at 8-4. Speaking after the match, Clayton said:
“It was great to play in the final with my World Cup partner. It just shows that two rugby boys can play darts, and to play against each other in the world of rugby here in New Zealand, I’ve got a smile on my face. I’m looking forward to Wollongong next week. Hopefully the sun will shine on me, and I can lift another trophy.”
Aside from lifting the trophy and pocketing the £30,000 prize for winning the title, the victory meant that Clayton had got his revenge on his compatriot who beat him in the final of the New Zealand Masters that was staged in Hamilton back in 2022.
The World Series of Darts continues in Wollongong next weekend with the Australian Darts Masters at the WIN Entertainment Centre on 21-22 August.
