Both of these sides have spent a small fortune during the summer transfer window but their performances on the field of play so far this season leave a lot to be desired.  United often struggle to impress their fans who long to see a return to the fast paced flowing football they enjoyed while Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge. They may have put a few goals past Club Brugge but in the Premier League they have only scored three in four games and one of those was an own goal. That Walker own goal in the win against Spurs is the only Premier League goal seen at Old Trafford this season. United were held 0-0 at home by Newcastle, who they usually beat comfortably, and then lost 2-1 at Swansea City. With Manchester City already five points ahead of them, United can't afford to fall further behind their rivals.  Their big signing in the transfer window was French teenager Anthony Martial who most United fans probably had never heard of.  He's likely to take a while to settle in and United could still struggle up front.
Liverpool started brightly with two 1-0 wins over Stoke and Bournemouth and a 0-0 draw at Arsenal. Then they lost 3-0 at home to West Ham and defensively looked poor. Surely that must just have been an off-day  An improved performance is a must for Liverpool and a tight game looks likely here.
