In less than 48 hours, South Africa is set to return to the World Cup scene, and Mzansi is starting to dream of glory. As the lowest-ranked team in Group A, Bafana Bafana face an uphill task to get to the knockout stage, but it’s certainly not impossible.

Third Place Could Be Enough For South Africa To Progress

South Africa are set to return to the World Cup after a 16-year absence since hosting the global tournament back in 2010, and while they are the rank outsiders to progress to the knockout rounds from their group, this is the stage where surprises certainly can happen.

The 2026 World Cup is going to be the biggest ever, featuring 48 teams in the group stage with the top two teams from each group automatically qualifying to the Round of 32. We will be covering all the matches at the tournament in our World Cup predictions

Bafana Bafana kick off their campaign against co-hosts Mexico in a repeat of the opening match of the 2010 World Cup. If they can pull off an upset against El Tricolor, it would put them in a very favourable position to clinch one of the top two places.

Back-to-back wins against Mexico and the Czech Republic would guarantee Hugo Broos’ side progression with a game to spare. Failing that, third place remains a possibility, and it’s expected that there will be several teams battling for those eight spots, with three points likely to be the threshold.

Indeed, points will be the key factor in deciding the eight best third-placed teams’ progress. Thereafter, goal difference and goals scored serve as the tie-breakers, respectively, making every goal significant during the group stage of the tournament.

For now, though, those complicated calculations will need to be put to the back of the mind of the South Africans, as their main focus will need to be providing a strong performance against Mexico on Thursday to build up momentum and confidence for the remainder of the group stage.
