England will head into the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup with momentum behind them after securing a 3-0 T20I series whitewash against Sri Lanka on Tuesday afternoon. The Poms will get their World Cup campaign started on Sunday against Nepal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

England spinners lead team to series sweep against Sri Lanka

England’s final warm-up series ahead of the eagerly awaited 2026 ICC T20 World Cup underlined their readiness for the upcoming global tournament, as they secured an impressive 3-0 victory over Sri Lanka on Tuesday afternoon.

After taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in Balagolla over the weekend, the Poms managed to pull off an incredible 12-run victory in the third and final T20 on Tuesday. They restricted their opponents to just 116 runs after posting a modest total of 128/9, confirming our cricket predictions

Player of the Series, Sam Curren, was the only player to score more than 30 runs for the visitors in their innings. However, the victory was attributable to their bowling unit, particularly the spin duo of Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks.

Jacks did the early damage, claiming the wickets of Kusal Mendis, Kamindu Mendis and Janith Liyanage to finish with figures of 3/14, while Bethell tore through the lower order, picking up three wickets in the 18th over en route to a magnificent 4/11 in just 3.3 overs.

The result marked England’s lowest successful defence in T20 cricket. While it was not the most convincing performance for Harry Brook’s side, a whitewash victory in the sub-continent a week before the T20 World Cup will give them a massive boost of confidence heading into the global showpiece.

Brook praises team’s versatility ahead of T20 World Cup

After an underwhelming performance at the Champions Trophy last year, England are under pressure to produce a big performance at the T20 World Cup. They are the joint-most successful nation in the tournament’s history with two titles (2010 and 2022).

India, co-hosts of the upcoming competition, are the firm favourites to retain the title, given their recent form in the shortest format and home advantage. However, Brook expressed confidence in his team’s versatility and readiness to challenge for the crown after their victory over Sri Lanka. He said:

“We have shown we can adapt to surfaces. It was a tricky pitch to bat on tonight but Curran got us to a decent total. We have some amazing spinners and it was a really fun game. We take a lot of confidence .”
