Sunrisers Eastern Cape beat Pretoria Capitals to reclaim SA20 title
SEC claim record-extending third title at Newlands Cricket Ground
The SA20 has been one of the saviours of domestic cricket in South Africa, and Season 4 was arguably the best one yet, capped off with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape reclaiming the title by beating the Pretoria Capitals and confirming our cricket predictions.
SEC opted to bowl after winning the toss at the Newlands Cricket Ground on Sunday afternoon and immediately put their opponents on the back foot, dismissing Connor Esterhuizen and West Indian star Shai Hope for just one run combined in the second over.
Dewald Brevis produced a stellar performance for the Capitals batting at number four. He scored 101 runs off just 56 deliveries, singlehandedly contributing 63% of his side’s total of 158/7 in their 20 overs.
Despite their relatively modest total, the Pretoria-based side made a proper fist of their defence and were in the ascendancy just after the powerplay, having reduced their opponents to 48/4 by the ninth over. However, that was until Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs turned the game on its head.
Breetzke finished with 68 runs off 49 deliveries, including five 4s and two 6s, while skipper Stubbs smashed 63 runs from 41 balls. The Proteas pair timed their onslaught to perfection, wrapping up the match in the final over with four wickets still intact.
