Atlas Lions Lead CAF Nations in World Cup Goals
The 2026 World Cup has been a breakthrough one for African nations, with as many as nine of the 10 representatives from the CAF region progressing beyond the group stage to earn a spot in the Round of 32 on football’s grandest stage.
While the likes of South Africa, Ghana, and Cape Verde have claimed their place in the history books with their performances, Morocco is still widely considered the nation to take the continent the furthest in the competition following their incredible run in Qatar four years ago.
So far, the Atlas Lions have fully lived up to expectations, having emerged from a competitive Group C in second place before punching their ticket to the Round of 16 with a stunning victory over the Netherlands that confirmed our 2026 World Cup predictions.
In their final group-stage clash against Haiti, Mohamed Ouahbi’s side fought back from a goal down twice to secure a 4-2 victory over Haiti, with Bayern Munich-bound Ismael Saibari playing a crucial role in leading the team to the comeback triumph.
Morocco has now scored 26 goals in World Cup matches!
Indeed, the Atlas Lions’ victory over Les Grenadiers took their tally of World Cup goals to 26 in just 26 matches, which saw them surpass the long-standing record held by Nigeria (23), who failed to qualify for this year’s global tournament in North America.
Morocco now leads the all-time goals standings among African nations. Nigeria are second, Cameroon (22) hold third, while Senegal and Ghana sit tied for fourth on 19 goals apiece. The Teranga Lions have the highest goals-per-match efficiency with their 19 goals coming in just 14 games.
Morocco Rack Up Records in 2026 World Cup

Aside from becoming Africa’s top-scoring nation on the World Cup stage, Morocco’s run in North America this year, capped off by their stunning shootout victory over the Netherlands, has also earned them a handful of other notable records. These include:
- Morocco set a new milestone by becoming the first African team to go unbeaten in six consecutive group-stage matches across multiple World Cup editions
- Morocco has now progressed from three World Cup knockout matches - the combined total achieved by all other African teams in the tournament’s history
- Morocco recorded the highest possession by an African team in a World Cup knockout match, dominating 70% of possession against the Dutch in the RO32
The Atlas Lions had already made history by becoming the first CAF nation to reach a World Cup semi-final, doing so four years ago in Qatar. They are looking to break that record this year, but need to first navigate their Round of 16 clash against Canada on Saturday night.
