Alhassan Yusuf Leads Super Eagles to Unity Cup Title Defence

While it has been a largely disappointing year for Nigerian football, having finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles were given a reason to celebrate last weekend after winning the 2026 Unity Cup. 

The three-time African champions kicked off their campaign at The Valley in London with an impressive 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe, with EFL Championship outfit Millwall’s Oluwafemi “Femi” Azeez bagging a brace early in each half. 

The Warriors still managed to end the tournament on a positive note by beating India in the third-placed Playoff, thanks to a first-half penalty by Young Africans forward Prince Dube. India had lost their opening match of the competition 2-0 to Jamaica a couple of days earlier.

Nigeria, meanwhile, were expected to face a stern test in the final, but they were in control of the match from the first whistle and took the lead after just three minutes, with Alhassan Yusuf sticking away a rebounded shot for his first of the afternoon. 

After dominating the remainder of the half, the Super Eagles extended their lead just before the hour mark after Azeez picked out his skipper Terem Moffi. Yusuf then netted his second of the match in the final minute of regulation time to secure the silverware. 

Nigeria Set Sights on Portugal, Poland Friendlies  

Despite not heading to North America for the World Cup, Nigeria are scheduled to be in action in the coming days, as they will face Poland at the National Stadium in Warsaw, and Portugal at Estadio Jose Alvalade on June 3 and 10, respectively. 

Notably, the vast majority of players who featured for the Super Eagles in their Unity Cup triumph will not make the trip to Europe in the coming week, with Chelle set to send out a more experienced team, albeit several notable exclusions have been revealed in the last 24 hours.

Following their return from London, Chelle confirmed that star duo Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman have been allowed to withdraw from the squad for the upcoming fixtures. 

It is understood that Osimhen requested to remain behind and focus fully on resolving his future, given he is at the centre of ongoing transfer discussions, while Lookman has been excused to recuperate after a physically demanding season with Atletico Madrid.
