Arsenal, Chelsea ‘Lead Race’ To Sign Nigerian Centre-Back This Summer
Fernandez Attracting Interest of Several Clubs Across Europe
While Victor Osimhen has largely been dominating headlines around a possible move from Galatasaray this summer, another Nigerian player has emerged as one of the key targets for clubs across Europe in recent days - Emmanuel Fernandez.
The 24-year-old centre-back only arrived at Glasgow giants Rangers at the start of the 2025-26 season from Peterborough United in a deal worth €2.9m, but he has already built a reputation as one of the standout defenders in the Scottish Premiership.
Fernandez was a central figure in helping the Gers clinch third place in the Scottish top-flight last term, contributing five goals in 33 appearances across all competitions. His solid displays at the heart of the team’s defence also earned him their Player of the Season award.
Owing to his impressive performances, reports in the last couple of days have suggested that Fernandez is now firmly on the radar of several clubs across Europe, including Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, who are considered to be favourites to secure his signature.
It is understood that West Ham United and Everton are among the other English teams monitoring the central defender, while Club Brugge, Feyenoord, Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen have also been credited with an interest in his services.
Rangers’ Valuation Poses Potential Stumbling Block for Fernandez Move
Despite speculation that the Gunners and the Blues are among the front-runners to secure Fernandez’s signature this summer, West Ham United are believed to have been the first to make a formal enquiry regarding his availability.
Rangers are reportedly open to allowing the 24-year-old to leave this summer, but their asking price for the Nigerian defender could prove an issue, with Transfermarkt valuing him at €18m, while the Gers have placed a €28m price tag on him.
The Hammers are looking to bolster their defensive depth as they target an immediate return to the Premier League following relegation last season. Fernandez is believed to be one of their primary targets, with Konstantinos Mavropanos widely expected to depart the London Stadium this summer.
Fernandez is expected to be involved when Rangers face West Ham in their final pre-season fixture, which could offer the Irons a valuable opportunity to assess the defender up close ahead of the Light Blues’ league opener against Dundee United on July 31.
