Huge blow! South African batting duo ruled out of 2026 T20 World Cup
De Zorzi, Ferreira forced to pull out of Proteas World Cup squad
We are now less than 10 days away from the start of the 10th edition of the ICC T20 World Cup, and the anticipation is building for what is expected to be a thrilling tournament, which we will be covering in our T20 World Cup 2026 predictions.
There have been several talking points in the lead-up to the tournament, such as the exclusion of Bangladesh and a late call-up for Scotland, while several teams have been forced into late changes owing to player injuries in recent weeks.
South Africa were the latest to suffer injury blows, with two of their key players, Tony de Zorzi and Donovan Ferreira, both being ruled out of the competition. Ryan Rickleton and Tristan Stubbs are now set to replace them at the global showpiece in India and Sri Lanka next month.
De Zorzi was included in the Proteas’ original squad despite having only played two T20Is, but he suffered a hamstring injury during the team’s tour to India last month and has not recovered in time. Ferreira, on the other hand, broke his collarbone during the SA20 last week.
Rickleton and Stubbs were surprise omissions from Shukri Conrad’s selection, but the former got the nod thanks to his excellent performance at the SA20, while the latter is still widely considered one of South Africa’s best batsmen, despite a recent dip in form.
In addition to De Zorzi and Ferreira, there is still a major cloud of uncertainty hanging over David Miller, who had to skip the team’s series against the West Indies to focus on recovering from a groin issue. Ruben Hermann is likely to replace Miller if he is not able to return to full fitness.
South Africa kick of World Cup prep with victory over Windies

As part of their preparation for the T20 World Cup, South Africa are playing three T20Is against the West Indies this month before a final warm-up game against India on February 4 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
On Wednesday, the Proteas produced a commanding performance in their first T20I, beating the Windies by nine wickets and with 13 balls to spare. They were chasing a target of 173/7 and have now taken a 1-0 lead in the series.
After winning the toss and putting Roston Chase’s side in to bat, the Proteas delivered with the ball, with George Linde (3/25), Corbin Bosch (2/35) and Keshav Maharaj (2/44) sharing the wickets. Kagiso Rabada got through his four overs but ended wicketless.
During their chase, Lhuan-dre Pretorious and Aiden Markram posted a first-wicket stand of 83 in eight overs before the former departed. Ryan Rickleton struck 40 off 32, while Markram went on to score 86* off just 47 deliveries, guiding his side to victory with more than two overs to spare.
