India Bag Six Asian Games Medals Over Opening Weekend
The 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, got underway on Friday with athletes from across the continent carrying their nations' hopes of winning medals across multiple disciplines
The highlight of the weekend for India was seeing the women’s cricket team secure a spot in the gold medal match after trouncing Bangladesh in the semi-final, while the nation also enjoyed a strong medal-winning session in shooting on Sunday afternoon.
India’s women’s and men’s 10m air rifle teams won silver, while Himanshu Dhillon and Rudrankksh Patil secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the individual tournament.
Suchika Tariyal then made her mark on the competition by securing a bronze medal in the women’s Traditional 60kg MMA competition. She had guaranteed India a medal a day earlier after beating Altanchimeg Baigalmaa of Mongolia 2-0 in the quarter-final.
With four silver medals and two bronze medals, India’s current tally stands at six - 10th in the overall standings. The action continues today, September 21, with the men’s and women’s teams opening their kabaddi title defence, while India will also face Pakistan in table tennis.
