Last week, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya revealed to the media that he is working toward bringing a Formula One race back to India by 2027. The Buddh International Circuit has been earmarked as the most likely destination, but several issues could derail Mandaviya’s plans - here’s the latest update.

India hoping for Grand Prix return after 13-year absence

Indian fans of Formula 1 were given a major reason for optimism last week after Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced that the government had set a target of 2027 to bring the roar of F1 back to the country after 13 years.

Mandaviya explained that preparations are already in motion, with key issues that previously hindered the event now being addressed. The Indian Grand Prix was staged three times, with the final race held in 2013. Speaking to the media, Mandaviya said:

“Preparations are underway for the return of Formula One (F1) to India after a gap of nearly 13 years. Issues related to the track have been resolved, and the work is expected to be completed within the next six months. The goal is to host an F1 race in India again before 2027.”

The planned comeback centres on the Buddh International Circuit, the nation’s only track built to Formula 1 standards. Once regarded as a major milestone for India’s motorsport ambitions, the circuit hosted the Indian GP between 2011 and 2013, all of which were won by Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel.

Although it started with strong enthusiasm and positive feedback from drivers, the event ended after 2013 due to a combination of tax issues, high running costs, and administrative hurdles. It was initially placed on hold in 2014 and later removed from the calendar entirely.

Formula 1 pushes back against possibiliy of Indian Grand Prix

Despite the positive outlook from Indian officials, Formula 1 has taken a more reserved stance. Based on its official position, a return to India by 2027 is viewed as unlikely at this stage, as there is currently no formal agreement in place between the relevant parties.

F1 officials have indicated that while India is still viewed as a valuable market with a large and engaged fan base, talks have not reached a meaningful or advanced stage at this point. As a result, claims of a confirmed race in 2027 have been downplayed.

Before any comeback of Formula 1 can take shape, India is reportedly prioritising the hosting of a MotoGP race as part of a wider plan to develop motorsport in the country - a move that is viewed as a key step toward restoring international trust and reinforcing India’s presence on the global racing calendar.
