The Sky Blues have made the permanent signing of Frank Onyeka, who joined them from Brentford on loan, their top priority this summer.

Onyeka to become first permanent signing for Frank Lampard in EPL

Coventry City have enjoyed arguably their best season in the past two decades, having confirmed our football predictions by winning the EFL Championship and securing their return to the Premier League with games to spare.

Following their 3-1 victory over Playoff hopefuls Wrexham last weekend, Frank Lampard admitted that the Sky Blues need to act swiftly to bolster their squad over the summer in order to give them the best chance of surviving their first season back in the top flight.

At the top of Coventry’s priority list is making Frank Onyeka’s deal a permanent one. The Nigerian international joined the Sky Blues on loan from Brentford during the winter transfer window and was instrumental for them over the second half of the season.

It is understood that Onyeka’s deal included a clause that obligated Coventry to sign him on a permanent contract if they secured promotion. Reports in recent days suggest that they will have to pay €9m to finalise his move from Brentford to the West Midlands.

The 28-year-old defensive midfielder joined the Bees from Midtjylland in 2021 for €10m. However, despite having a solid first season at the Gtech Community Stadium, he was unable to nail down a starting spot and spent last season on loan at Augsburg in the Bundesliga.

Coventry have yet to announce the exact financial details of the impending move, but it is believed that Onyeka is expected to be handed a three-year contract that will keep him at the Coventry Building Society Arena until the summer of 2029.

Onyeka named in EFL Championship Team of the Week

Following Coventry City’s title-confirming 3-1 victory over Wrexham at home last week, in which he registered his first assist for the club, Onyeka was recognised for his excellent performance by being named in the EFL Championship Team of the Week.

The Nigerian international completed two key passes and two successful dribbles against the Red Dragons, which earned him inclusion in the midfield setup alongside Morgan Whittaker of Middlesbrough, Adrian Segcic of Portsmouth, and Oxford United’s Will Vaulks.

Since arriving at Coventry, the 28-year-old has started 13 of 15 matches under Lampard and scored one goal, which is in contention for the club’s Goal of the Season. Being included in the Team of the Week underlines the key role he played in helping the Sky Blues return to England’s top flight.
