Super Falcons Keep WAFCON Title Defence Alive in Rabat

Nigeria punched their ticket to the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations after producing a commanding performance to beat Egypt 6-2 in their final Group C match in Rabat last night. 

As mentioned in our WAFCON predictions, the Super Falcons entered the fixture knowing they were at risk of missing the knockout stages for the first time in their history. However, they held the head-to-head advantage over Zambia, who needed to beat Malawi by at least three goals to remain in the mix. 

Before being forced off early with a knock, Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 21st minute after winning a spot-kick. It was her 16th WAFCON goal and the team’s first of six against the Cleopatras. 

However, Egypt, whose fate had already been decided before the match, responded when Michelle Alozie conceded a penalty by fouling Yassmin Mohamed in the area, allowing Nadine Ghazy to convert from the spot by sending Chiamaka Nnadozie the wrong way. 

Nigeria restored their two-goal cushion moments into the second half when Uchenna Kanu found the net with her first touch after coming off the bench before they were awarded two penalties in quick succession to secure the victory and their spot in the last eight. 

The 10-time African champions will now look forward to renewing their long-standing rivalry with Cameroon in the quarter-final on Sunday, August 9.
